Why Your Business May Need an Industrial Computer
5 (100%) 3 votes

Although many businesses primarily utilize OEM desktop and laptop computers, there are some applications where these machines are not the most suitable choice. In certain operating environments, the proper choice is an “Industrial Computer.”

WHAT IS AN INDUSTRIAL COMPUTER?

Industrial computers are machines that are designed to operate in an unusual environment. This can include machines that are hardened against shock, vibration, temperature, humidity and particulate matter in the air. These machines, though they perform the same functions as standard computers, are able to withstand a greater deal of abuse. They are more durable and can be placed into service for extremely long periods of time without failure or major maintenance.

Industrial computers are typically built using “commercial off the shelf” parts, often abbreviated as “COTS” parts. This means that they utilize motherboards, memory and storage devices that can be obtained for OEM and self built computers. What sets them apart from typical computers is that these machines typically use a single board implementation, which means no expansion cards are installed. In addition, the enclosure of these machines is typically hardened against environmental and direct physical threats. This can be seen in their exterior, which is usually metallic and often rubberized. Corners of the machine are often fitted with rubber shock absorption material. Ports are often replaced with specifically designed “cannon plugs” which often conform to military standards. In addition, the power supplies in these machines are usually more robust than their OEM counterparts.  Check this out for more info on OEM manufacturer.

WHAT ADVANTAGES DO THEY PROVIDE?

- Power Supply Superiority: Most OEM computers ship with a power supply that is equipped to handle its exact hardware configuration and nothing more. Not much headroom is provided on these units. They are often also built using a minimal number of components and lower grade parts. By comparison, industrial computers generally utilize high end power supplies that are intended to handle additional loads and to operate for a greater length of time between replacements. These supplies may also have more tightly regulated voltage tolerances on the +12V, +5V, +3.3V and negative voltage rails.

- More Rugged Construction: An industrial computer is designed to withstand physical impact, vibration, a rough environment and other potential threats to its continued operation. These machines are put together once and intended not to be opened again, under most circumstances. They are intended to stay in service for a very long period of time, substantially longer than a typical desktop or laptop computer.

- Industrial computers are uniquely suited to operating in assembly environments, which might be prone to midair particles, high temperatures and excessive vibration.

- The use of cannon plugs and other rugged connectors makes the machine able to withstand a greater number of device connect/disconnect cycles. They are also better suited for moving from place to place without sustaining damage.

- Industrial computers are often designed to operate in extreme weather conditions. Computers that need to operate outdoors in varying humidity and extreme temperatures need the seals, gaskets and precision thermal design that comes with industrial computers.

- Industrial computers are specifically designed for the task which they will perform. In the event that a business needs many units, they can save because extraneous parts are omitted. To see more advantages of industrial computers.

ARE THERE DOWNSIDES TO INDUSTRIAL COMPUTERS?

Industrial computers are not usually intended to be upgraded or even opened. They are intended to remain in a monolithic state for their entire service life. Although they are far hardier than OEM PCs, they are typically more expensive. They are intended for mission critical operations where a failed computer could result in loss of production and/or revenue.
